Engineering Lead (m/f/d) Industrial Automation – Sarajevo

ekvip automation GmbH is a software company specializing in mechanical and industrial engineering, headquartered in Leipzig with subsidiaries in the U.S. and Sarajevo. We develop TwinCAT 3 frameworks (including our open-source framework cinnamon), C# applications for the machine and line level, as well as services related to commissioning. We are looking for an Engineering Lead to help build our Sarajevo office. This role combines engineering, mentoring, sales, and marketing. We are looking for someone who is familiar with project-based business in industrial automation, who has commissioned machines, and who knows what it feels like to work on an EtherCAT cable on a Sunday evening when the system is scheduled to run at 6 a.m. on Monday.
Your Tasks
Building and providing technical leadership for two teams in Sarajevo—one for TwinCAT 3 (PLC development in mechanical engineering) and one for C# applications that interact with PLCs (HMI, line controllers, OPC UA middleware, MES integration).
Mentoring—inspiring junior developers to truly understand the fundamentals: state machines, real-time systems, architecture. You are the person to whom colleagues look for technical guidance.
Developing the Sarajevo location into a key supplier while simultaneously building a client base in the region.
Supporting sales—conducting technical pre-sales discussions with clients, outlining solution architectures, and helping to draft proposals.
Establishing and delivering training at the location
Supporting recruitment—establishing a branch office means, above all, finding the right people. You will conduct technical interviews, evaluate profiles, develop the local employer brand together with HR, and serve as the face of the location for applicants.
Close collaboration with ekvip in Leipzig and ekvip USA, including regular travel and system commissioning at customer sites.
Your Profile
10+ years of professional experience in industrial automation within custom machine building or at plant engineering firms.
In-depth experience with TwinCAT 3 (Beckhoff ecosystem, IEC 61131-3, OOP in PLCs, EtherCAT). We are not looking for candidates who come from the Siemens ecosystem and have merely “dabbled” in TwinCAT.
Substantial C#/.NET experience—ideally with machine-level applications, HMI frameworks, OPC UA, and message bus architectures.
Solid foundation in computer science—finite-state machines, graphs, real-time scheduling, memory layout, clean architecture.
On-site commissioning experience—you know what it means when the circuit diagram is incorrect and the mechanics behave differently than in the simulation.
Leadership experience in building teams
Customer communication—you can hold your own with both a technical buyer and a mechanical engineer.
Fluent in spoken and written English
